HIST 1993

Why Texas?

I chose Texas for the location of this study. I am familiar with the school systems (I attended Texas public and charter schools from the third to the twelfth grade) and it has a high number of native Spanish speakers, allowing me to have more data on children who would fall under the ‘necessity’ bilinguals. Furthermore, the Gini Coefficient of Texas is the same as the United States’ (0.48), which demonstrates that the wealth distribution of Texas is comparable to that of the nation.

Also... it's Texas... Why would I NOT choose Texas?

You can check out the attachment below to look at how every county in Texas performs on the STAAR exam; this will provide context to your understanding of which regions of Texas tend to score better on standardized exams. The sliders on the right will allow you to limit or expand test scores to see which counties fit in your chosen criteria.

I urge you to ask:

Which regions tend to do better?

Why might that be?

Which regions perform better on the Science portion?

How about the English portion?

Are the test results consistent with your expectations of Texas public school students?
