Thanksgiving: A Textual Analysis of the Commodification of Native Americans

The complexities of Native American relations with American settlers have been purposefully left out of American popular memory in favor of a more simplistic narrative, which is manifested by the creation of the Thanksgiving holiday. I seek to examine whether perspectives on Thanksgiving, in relation to Native Americans, have changed through time or differ by region by analyzing various newspaper articles across the United States. As someone who grew up in Massachusetts, I have always heard the sanitized story of the arrival at Plymouth Rock and the First Thanksgiving: Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn and before winter, had a large feast symbolizing their allegiance to each other. I even remember in third grade singing with my class at a Thanksgiving pageant about Christopher Columbus and the Pilgrims. As I grew older, I recognized that there was something fundamentally missing in my education: I live in a state whose name derives from the name of a tribe and…

Start-Up Chile: Examining its Impact on Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship in Chile

Welcome! My name is Calvin Duran, and I am currently a senior enrolled in History 1993: Introduction to Digital History, which is taught by Professor Gabriel Pizzorno. This exhibit attempts to assess the impact of Latin America’s first start-up accelerator, Start-Up Chile. Start-up accelerators are short-term, cohort-based programs that select promising start-ups and provide them with capital, workshops, mentors, and more. Established by the Chilean government and economic development agency CORFO in 2010, the Start-Up Chile program was designed to transform Chile into a leading technological and entrepreneurial hub of Latin America. With even some dubbing it "Chilecon Valley," Chile has undoubtedly experienced recent growth in innovation and investment in its start-up ecosystem, and many cite Start-Up Chile as playing a pivotal role in this development. Therefore, this research project utilizes digital scholarship to examine the impact of Start-Up Chile as policy intervention for…

Language Learning and Academic Performance in Texas Schools

Hello, and Welcome! My name is Esat and I am a Senior at Harvard studying History and Economics. I am currently enrolled in HIST 1993: Introduction to Digital History, taught by Gabriel Pizzorno, and this is my project. In this website, you will find data and information on Texas Public Schools from the year 2019. My motivation for this project was to explore how non-native English Speakers who attend Texas Public Schools perform on standardized exams. The majority of the already existing scholarship covers how native-English Speakers who are exposed to a non-native language perform on standardized exams. Therefore, there is a huge gap in our current understanding of standardized exam performance of non-native English Speakers. I worked to create a foundation for which further work can be built upon. I hope you find my work to be useful and interesting – Thank you for taking the time to look at my project!
