Approach and Analysis of Data
The Texas Education Agency annually publishes a report with comprehensive data highlighting every single public and charter school within Texas school districts. I extracted all of my data from the TEA from the year 2019.
For my dataset and calculations, I factor three core elements: the child’s language speaking abilities, the child’s academic performance, and the child’s family wealth and school district wealth (I included the wealth of the school district on top of the wealth of the child’s family because 1. the wealth of the school district can be independent of the wealth of the child’s family, particularly with the abundance of charter schools in Texas, and 2. the school district’s wealth plays a major factor in the opportunities and resources available to the child’s education). For each of these three elements, I incorporate a variety of data:
Language Speaking Abilities:
- Students: % English Learners (El)
- Students: % Special Education
- Students: % Bilingual/ESL Education
As a percentage of students whose parents identify their children as such.
Academic Performance:
- Annual Dropout Rate Gr. 9-12 (2017-18)
- STAAR: % All Subjects at Approaches Grade Level Standard or Above
- STAAR: % All Subjects at Meets Grade Level Standard or Above
- STAAR: % All Subjects at Masters Grade Level Standard
- STAAR: % Economically Disadvantaged at Approaches Grade Level Standard or Above
- STAAR: % Economically Disadvantaged at Meets Grade Level Standard or Above
- STAAR: % Economically Disadvantaged at Masters Grade Level Standard
- SAT/ACT-Average Score (2018-2017)
School self-reported data, audited by the Texas Education Agency.
Family Income and School District Wealth:
- Students: % Economically Disadvantaged
- Total Operating and Other Revenue (2017-18)
- Total Operating and Other Revenue Per Pupil
- Total Operating Revenue (2017-18)
- Revenue: % State
- Revenue: % Local and Other
- Revenue: % Federal
- Total Other Revenue (2017-18)
- Fund Balance (For ISDs)
- Net Assets (Charter Schools)
- Property Wealth
- Tax Rate
This information is directly extracted from the individual schools; other data, such as tax rate and property wealth, refers to the location of the school and is public information.
